Vineyards
The fruit for our wines comes from vineyards situated in the hills north and east of Verona in the Valpantena and Alpone valleys. Cool breezes blow down the valleys off the foothills of the Dolomites, making the area ideal for cultivating vines and olives. Both the cool currents and the proximity to Lake Garda help moderate the climate, giving a long growing season so the grapes ripen slowly, helping retain their aromatic compounds and acidity.
In the Valpantena valley, directly north-east of Verona, the soil is poor and chalky so the vines are put under stress helping to produce superior quality fruit. All of the grapes for the Alpha Zeta wines are grown here with the exception of some of the Pinot Grigio.
Most of the Pinot Grigio grapes are sourced from hillside vineyards in the Alpone valley, in the commune of Monteforte d'Alpone in eastern Soave. Here the vines are planted on granite and decomposed volcanic rock, producing steelier wines. The hillside sites are slightly cooler so the grapes ripen later imparting more precise and elegant flavours in the wines.
The 9 ha ‘Terrapieno’ vineyard, situated in the Valpantena valley, produces Pinot Grigio grapes of outstanding quality. In 2013 we were so impressed with the quality we decided to bottle a premium Pinot Grigio using grapes sourced solely from this vineyard.
